You're right that the S5 4.2 has more in common with the B7 RS4 than the B6/B7 S4 (i.e. it has 32 valves and not 40). It is still chain driven, just like the RS4 is, and the chains are on the back of the motor too. However with that said, the S5 and RS4 do not suffer from the same timing chain guide issues as far as I know.
