Ford Focus alternator smart charging. First things first, check the battery, not just condition, but correct type. A lead acid battery will not work properly with smart charge, it must be Silver Calcium! Easy to over look. Next, put a meter across the battery.
1687 posts · Joined 2008. #7 · Oct 19, 2013. If voltage is 15v then disconnect the 3 pin multiplug and recheck voltage. If around 13v then you have a smart charge fault, either alternator, wiring or ECU fault.
The voltage sits at 13.5v when the smart charge is disconnected from the alternator. Runs 14.1v-14.3v when its connected back in place. I've got a new alternator to put in tomorrow, but my only concern is what do i try next if this doesn't fix the problem.

A lot of energy passes through that belt. A wrong belt can not make the alternator turn slower without slip, and consequent friction heating. It will not be the starter motor. If the van starts ok, it is not likely to be the battery. So that leaves the alternator, the wiring and the electronic control units.

I cleared all of the fault codes before starting the engine again. All of the voltage issue codes have disappeared but I still have the codes that relates to the smart charging and the alternator control. The battery warning light has reappeared on the dash. The alternator is giving a nice consistent voltage around 14.
